To be honest this is a question that pops up a lot….so explaining where a Chartered Building Surveyor fits in the construction sector is not too difficult.
Basically a Chartered Building Surveyor provides a variety of services across the construction industry ranging from Pre Purchase Building Surveys/Reports to Design to Planning to Project Management to Contract Administration and more.
In Ireland the professional title… Building Surveyor… is protected, the same as an Architect or Engineer under the Building Control Act of 2007. What this basically means is that unless your suitably qualified you can not call yourself a Building Surveyor.
There is a service online through the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland (SCSI) to check that your building surveyor is chartered, this is a handy tool to gauge that the qualifications of the professional in front of you are real….. https://scsi.ie/the-register/check-the-register/
I also attach an SCSI guide listing some services that can be conducted by a Building Surveyor with the full list very substantial. Hopefully this helps clear up some of the uncertainty.
